11-year-old seriously injured after being struck by car in New Riegel

New Riegel, Ohio — The Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating a car versus pedestrian crash that occurred Sunday at approximately 7:30 p.m. on State Route 587 in the village of New Riegel.

44-year-old Leah Rymers, of Northwood, Ohio, was driving a 2014 Dodge Grand Caravan northwest on State Route 587.

11-year-old Nicholas Kirtland, of Salisbury, Maryland, was a pedestrian on the sidewalk in front of New Riegel Café when he entered the roadway from between two parked vehicles and was struck by Rymers’ vehicle, according to OSHP.

Rymers was wearing her safety belt and was not injured. Nicholas Kirtland was taken by Life Flight to St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center in Toledo with serious injuries.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol was assisted by Seneca County EMS, Life Flight, NBS Joint Fire District, and the Seneca County Sheriff’s Office.
