New details emerge in Tiffin infant abduction case
Tiffin, Ohio — New details have emerged in the tragic incident that unfolded in Tiffin on Tuesday afternoon, shedding light on the sequence of events and the ongoing investigation.
According to an updated press release from the Tiffin Police Department, the incident originated in the city of North Baltimore, Ohio, on Tuesday. It began as a dispute between the mother of the 7-month-old child, whose name is being withheld, and her boyfriend, identified as 23-year-old Johnathon J. Baker. During the altercation, Baker allegedly took the infant and fled the scene in his vehicle.
Authorities swiftly responded to the situation, with the North Baltimore Police issuing a “Be On the Lookout” (BOLO) alert to law enforcement agencies in the surrounding area, with particular emphasis on Seneca and Sandusky Counties. The suspect vehicle was spotted as it traveled through the City of Tiffin, prompting both the Seneca County Sheriff’s Office and Tiffin Police Department cruisers to initiate a traffic stop.
However, the situation took a tragic turn as Baker allegedly chose to evade law enforcement. The suspect vehicle rapidly accelerated and veered off the roadway, crashing into a residence located at 613 S. Sandusky St. Fortunately, no occupants were present inside the home at the time of the collision, sparing them from harm.
Responding officers quickly extracted the child from the vehicle and administered lifesaving protocols. Medical assistance was also provided to Baker. Both the infant and Baker were swiftly transported to Tiffin Mercy Hospital. Sadly, despite the best efforts of medical professionals, the infant succumbed to her injuries shortly after arrival at the hospital.
Baker’s condition remains critical, and he has since been transferred via air ambulance to Toledo St. Vincent’s Hospital for continued medical care.
