Willard man dies in head-on collision on State Route 162

Norwalk, Ohio — The Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating a two-vehicle head-on crash that occurred on Thursday at around 1:41 p.m. on State Route 162 near Lyon Road in Greenfield Township, Huron County.

According to reports, Nathan G. Salazar, 24, of Willard, was driving a black 1997 Dodge pickup truck heading eastbound on State Route 162 when he crossed the center line and collided head-on with a blue 2018 Republic Services Mack truck driven by Steven A. Overmeyer, 62, of Fremont.

After the collision, the Republic Services truck veered off the right side of the road into a ditch, while Salazar’s pickup truck landed in the middle of the road and caught fire.

Salazar was not wearing a safety belt and was ejected from his vehicle. He died as a result of injuries sustained in the crash.

Overmeyer, who was wearing a safety belt, received possible injuries and was treated on the scene by Willard Fire and Rescue.

It is unknown at this time whether alcohol or drugs played a role in the accident. The crash remains under investigation by the Ohio State Highway Patrol, and any witnesses or anyone with information about the incident is encouraged to contact the Norwalk Post.

The Huron County Sheriff’s Office, the Willard Police Department, Willard Fire and Rescue, ODOT, the Huron County Coroner’s Office, Huron County EMA, and Wilcox Towing all assisted at the scene of the crash.
