Ohio EPA to hold public meeting on proposed Sunny Farms Landfill changes
Fostoria, Ohio — The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will be hosting a public meeting on Thursday, May 11, to discuss an application to modify the wastewater discharge permit for the Sunny Farms Landfill in Fostoria.
The meeting will take place at Stacy’s Place located at 625 Plaza Drive, Fostoria. The information session will commence at 6 p.m. followed by a hearing, during which the public will have the opportunity to submit comments on the record regarding the application for the discharge permit. The landfill, owned by WIN Waste Innovations, is situated at 21500 West County Road 18.
The application in question pertains to the relocation of two existing stormwater sedimentation ponds on the landfill property. These ponds are responsible for collecting stormwater runoff to facilitate the settling of solid particles before the water is discharged to a local stream. The ponds do not contain leachate from the waste in the landfill, according to the Ohio EPA.
It is worth mentioning that this application is associated with the company’s request to expand the landfill. However, the approval of the wastewater discharge permit would not grant permission for the expansion to commence. The application for the landfill expansion is being reviewed separately and would entail another opportunity for public input.
In the event that the discharge permit is approved, it would be subject to Ohio’s water quality standards, which are in place to protect human health and the environment, and must not be violated.
The Ohio EPA is currently accepting public comments regarding the application until 5 p.m. on May 18. The application is available for review online at this link, and written comments can be submitted during the hearing, mailed to Ohio EPA-DSW, Attn: Permits Processing Unit, P.O. Box 1049, Columbus, OH 43216-1049, or emailed to epa.dswcomments@epa.ohio.gov. When submitting comments via email, please include the permit name or ID number (NPDES permit 2IN00136) in the subject line.
