Police provide update on New Year’s Day murder of Dollar Tree employee
Upper Sandusky, Ohio — The Upper Sandusky Police Department, in cooperation with the Wyandot County Sheriff’s Office and the Wyandot County Major Crimes Unit, have released an update in the investigation of the death of Keris Riebel, who was killed on New Year’s Day while working at the Dollar Tree store in Upper Sandusky.
According to a press release from the Upper Sandusky Police Department, 27-year-old Bethel M. Bekele was taken into custody on January 1 and charged with murder. Bekele remains in custody with no bond and has been indicted on charges of aggravated murder and additional counts.
The investigation into the incident revealed that Bekele entered the store with a machete, approached Riebel, and struck her numerous times with the weapon. However, the police department stated that there has been no evidence found to indicate that Bekele was acting in cooperation with any other person or organization.
Additionally, the investigation has revealed no connection or relationship between the victim, Keris Riebel, and the defendant, Bethel M. Bekele. The police department emphasized that the defendant was only a customer at the store where the victim was employed.
The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation, the Wyandot County Sheriff’s Office, Wyandot County EMS, Upper Sandusky Fire Department, Wyandot County Coroner’s Office, and Wyandot County Prosecutor’s Office are also assisting in the investigation.
The public is encouraged to come forward with any information or tips that may aid the investigation.
The case is pending in the Wyandot County Court of Common Pleas.
