Massillon man killed in Erie County crash: OSHP

Groton Township, Ohio — A Massillon man was killed in a two-vehicle crash Monday afternoon in Erie County, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

The crash occurred at approximately 2:49 p.m. on State Route 99 at the intersection of Harris Road in Groton Township, Erie County.

39-year-old Joseph R. Lenke, of Oak Harbor, was driving a 2021 Mack Granite truck northbound on State Route 99.

63-year-old Craig R. Griffith, of Massillon, was operating a 2010 Honda Accord.

According to OSHP, Griffith was stopped at the stop sign for the intersection of Harris Road and State Route 99. Griffith failed to yield from the posted stop sign and was struck by Lenke’s truck.

Griffith, who was wearing his seatbelt, suffered fatal injuries as a result of the crash. He was transported to Pfeil Funeral Home in Sandusky. The Honda Accord sustained disabling damage and was towed by Perkin’s Towing.

Lenke did not sustain any injuries. He was also wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash, according to OSHP. Lenke’s truck sustained disabling damage and was towed by Ralph’s Towing.

Alcohol and/or drug use are not believed to have been a factor at this time. The crash remains under investigation.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol was assisted on scene by Erie County Sheriff’s Office, Groton Township Fire/EMS, North Central EMS, Perkin’s Towing, and Ralph’s Towing.
