Fostoria, Ohio — Ohio EPA will hold a public meeting at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 25, 2022, at Stacy’s Place, 625 Plaza Drive, Fostoria, to discuss and take comments on the proposed renewal of the air pollution operating permit for Sunny Farms Landfill in Seneca County.

The meeting begins at 6 p.m. with the Agency giving a short presentation about the permitting process and the permit renewal, then answering questions from the public. A hearing will immediately follow, allowing the public to submit written comments on the record about the proposed permit renewal.

This meeting was originally scheduled in a virtual format in June. That meeting was postponed and rescheduled as an in-person meeting.

If approved, the air permit renewal would replace the existing operating air permit and would be updated to include a requirement to install sulfur controls (as required by previous director’s findings and orders and the recently issued installation permit). Installation of the sulfur controls will significantly decrease emissions from the landfill.

The draft permit describes all applicable air pollution requirements that must be met by the facility and covers all operations at the landfill, including landfill operations, the railcar unloading building, and unpaved roadways and parking areas. The maximum allowable emission levels in air permits are designed to protect human health and the environment.

This draft air permit-to-operate and this public meeting are not related to the landfill’s proposed expansion. Sunny Farms has submitted a separate application requesting a permit to expand the landfill. That application is being evaluated and will include an opportunity for the public to participate in the future. The landfill is located at 21500 West County Road 18, Fostoria.

Participants who want handouts for the meeting should email [email protected] so electronic copies may be emailed on the day of the public meeting.

Ohio EPA will accept written comments on the proposed permit renewal through Sept. 5, 2022. Written comments may be submitted at the virtual hearing or sent to Alyse Wineland, Division of Air Pollution Control, Ohio EPA Northwest District Office, 347 North Dunbridge Road, Bowling Green, OH, 43402, or [email protected].
