13-year-old riding bicycle killed in hit-and-run crash

UPDATE: A Shiloh, Ohio man has been arrested for the fatal hit-and-run crash. 38-year-old Bud D. Thornsberry, of Shiloh, approached troopers while they were out looking for him. His vehicle was also seized and held as evidence. Thornsberry has been charged with aggravated vehicular assault, tampering with evidence, and failure to stop after an accident causing death, all felonies. He was incarcerated at the Richland County Jail and arraigned Monday morning in Shelby Municipal Court.

Richland County, Ohio — A 13-year-old boy was killed in a hit-and-run crash Sunday morning in Cass Township, Richland County.

According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, the crash occurred at approximately 9:15 a.m. when a truck driving north on Bowman Road struck a bicycle, which was cycling north on Bowman Road.

The occupant of the bicycle, identified as a 13-year-old Luke R. Newswanger, of Shelby, was killed as a result of the crash.

The pickup truck fled the scene.

Bowman Road was closed between Hazelbrush Road and Miller Road for approximately three hours.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol is seeking the assistance of the public in identifying and locating the pickup truck involved in the crash.

The pickup truck is described as a black or dark green extended cab pickup with damage to the passenger side front end, including the headlight assembly.

The driver side tail light was described to have red tape in place of the actual tail light, and a faded tailgate.

Troopers say the truck was described as an early 2000s model, Chevrolet or GMC, possibly a Colorado or Canyon model pickup truck.

The vehicle has been seen in the area on other occasions prior to this crash.
