Tiffin, Ohio — In a new partnership with RIZE Education, Tiffin University will offer three new concentrations beginning fall 2021: video game design, web design and esports management.

RIZE, a higher education company, utilizes a course-sharing model that helps private colleges and universities expand educational opportunities for students while streamlining and lowering institutional costs. The RIZE consortium helps schools create new shared majors, using top-quality curricula developed and taught by leading experts from industry and academia. With the help of RIZE, Tiffin University can adopt high-demand programs, including its three new concentrations.

“RIZE enhances the traditional college experience,” said Dr. Terry Sullivan, Vice Provost and Dean of TU’s School of Business. “Tiffin University students will earn their degree at the school they love while taking several virtual courses from experts in high-demand fields. This newer way of thinking helps Tiffin University leverage expert faculty, expand degree offerings and prepare students for careers in the fastest-growing fields.”

“Our students in computer science and sports management now have access to courses designed and maintained by top academic minds and industry leaders, such as Google and Unity Technologies,” said Dr. Peter Holbrook, Tiffin University’s Provost and Chief Academic Officer. “Tiffin University’s professionally focused programs in computer science will prepare students for the workforce while earning a degree and professional certifications.”

Video Game Design

Tiffin University’s video game design concentration teaches a combination of design and programming skills needed to take a video game from an idea to a finished product.

Unity Engine, the world’s most-used game engine, is central to RIZE’s program. Students will complete 15 credit hours of work in Unity, learning key principles of game design, systems design and ultimately building their own fully functioning game. Along the way, they will learn to program in Python, C#, JavaScript, HTML5, and CSS3 – all valuable languages in both the games industry and the larger technology space.

Students will obtain three professional certifications during the program and complete real-world projects that will prepare them for a career as a programmer, designer or producer. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, a game developer’s median salary is slightly over $85,000, with salaries at larger firms exceeding $110,000.

Web Design

Tiffin University’s web design concentration teaches students how to create websites using modern web development practices. Students will learn both hard coding skills and customer-focused design principles. RIZE’s program includes a heavy emphasis on project-based learning and students will have the opportunity to earn several industry certifications, including the MCSA: Web Applications (Microsoft Certification).

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, web designers are in high demand. The median salary for web designers is $73,760 and – as per CNBC – there are over 700,000 open jobs in tech, most of which require a technically focused skillset.

Esports Management

Esports, a global entertainment industry of competitive video gaming, has taken the world by storm. In 2019, the esports industry had grown 85 percent with over 240,000 jobs in the games industry, including roles in distribution, research, sales and marketing. The median salary of an esports manager ranges between $70,000 to $90,000.

Tiffin University’s esports management concentration focuses on providing students with a broad base of experience, real-world skills and knowledge to manage teams, tournaments and gaming conventions. The RIZE program has partnerships with Unity Technologies, the world’s most-used game development tool, and the International Game Developers Association. Both partners will keep content up-to-date and help with job opportunities.
