Tiffin, Ohio — The Ohio College Initiative at Prevention Action Alliance, the Ohio Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services, and the Ohio Department of Higher Education awarded Tiffin University a mental health and wellness grant.
According to Julie Richards, Director of Counseling and Wellness Services at TU, the $31,451.61 grant will be used toward promoting the general mental health and well-being of the campus.
The grant will benefit TU students and the community by supporting the efforts to focus on grassroots assistance, campus activities and the promotion of general health across the TU campus.
“We have developed a semester-long approach to raise awareness about mental health, reduce stigma about seeking counseling support and providing healthy and socially safe outings to encourage students to find balance and relieve stress,” said Richards.
This upcoming semester will feature a virtual presentation at TU with national speaker, Anthony McLean, to offer encouragement, hope and education about managing mental health and how to seek support.
The presentation will be shown in student organizations, athletic team meetings, residence life meetings and classes during the next two weeks. The University will also continue to provide weekly mental health outreach throughout campus, supportive and substance use groups and field trips for healthy stress relief.
“We do know that in times of chronic stress and pressure, the risk for increased substance use/abuse and development of mental health symptoms are on the rise,” said Richards. “We want to use this grant to wrap our campus community in support.”
The Counseling Team, especially the mentors of the department, Julie Richards and Amy Spell, has made it possible for students and the TU community to get the resources they need to navigate these challenging times.
