Fremont, Ohio — Terra State Community College student Alex Poynter has been named the College’s Fremont Rotary Student of the Month for November 2020.

Poynter resides in Clyde and graduated from Clyde High School. He was actively involved in music and played the saxophone in multiple bands including concert band, wind ensemble, marching band, jazz band and pep band.

Poynter received the Semper Fidelis Award for Musical Excellence during high school. The award is given to high school band students who show aspects that the Marine Corps deem essential to be a good leader; unselfishness, enthusiasm, loyalty and dependability. At Terra State, Poynter is studying music technology and recording arts.

“I’ve been leaning towards education, as I want to try and inspire the future generations to study what they love. Just as long as it’s positive for them, they should know that it’s possible, even if at times it seems like things are stacked against them,” said Poynter.

Terra State was a close to home option that offered degrees and certificates in programs that were interesting to him.

“I will take every experience from my performances and education, especially about music business and theory, here at Terra State after I leave,” said Poynter.

Poynter performs in numerous ensembles at Terra State, including the jazz band, fusion band and concert band. In the community, Poynter performs with the Sandusky Vacationland Band and is a part of Venturing Crew 463, an inclusive adventure program through the Boy Scouts of America.

His nominator Mark Knapp, adjunct faculty in music, sees great potential in Poynter to succeed after his time at Terra State.

“Alex is a hardworking individual who has shown outstanding ability in his execution of music and music technology principles and ideologies. He strives to better himself with each endeavor, and always goes a step beyond what is asked of him,” said Knapp, “I firmly believe that Alex will find happiness and success in the music industry, regardless of where his experiences lead him.”

Poynter recognizes his friends and family for always encouraging him to succeed and work towards his goals.

“I’d just like to give a thanks to my mother (Lori Poynter), my sisters (Destiny and Skye Stetcher), my girlfriend (Alyssa Amor), and my best friend (Cade Lamb) for believing in me and pushing me to do the thing I love, which is music,” said Poynter.

Poynter already has multiple job opportunities in music production for after graduation and would like to produce his own personal music.
