TIFFIN — The City of Tiffin has received a grant for two electric vehicle charging units.
The city received a reservation award letter from AEP Ohio EV Charging Incentive Program in the amount of $150,000.
The funds are to be used to install two DC Fast Charging units for electric vehicles (EV) in City Lot 7 in Downtown Tiffin.
Installation is proposed to start this month and be completed by the end of October.
The Seneca Regional Planning Commissioner (SRPC) applied for the AEP EV Charging Station Incentive Program on behalf of the City of Tiffin.
AEP has formally notified SRPC of the reservation award in the amount of $150,000 for the City of Tiffin.
SRPC has been in communication with ABM Electrical Power Solutions to revise the quote that was received in 2018 and start moving forward with the project.
The grant covers the purchase of the equipment, installation, warranties, network requirements, and signage.
The total cost for the project is $158,000. SRPC is seeking other funds to fill the gap for the City of Tiffin.
The City of Tiffin will have ABM Electrical Power Solutions install two Level 3 DC Fast Charging Units.
These units will enable an electric vehicle to charge to 80% of the battery within 30 minutes. They require 480-volts service.
Each charging station is equipped with two Power Modules that deliver up to 62.3 kW to a vehicle, as well as credit/debit card readers for users to pay for the charging.
The charging stations will support legacy and future battery packs from 200-volts to 1,000-volts.
The city sees this as not only a service to the citizens of Tiffin, but an opportunity for a positive economic impact. The closest charging station of this capacity is in Bowling Green, Ohio.
Having two of the fastest charging stations will put Tiffin on the map in the ChargePoint mobile application. This, the city says, will allow visitors to the Tiffin community a place to charge their vehicle and explore the revitalized downtown area of Tiffin and visit local retail and restaurants while their vehicle is charging.
“We’re excited to announce the city of Tiffin will be receiving two fast charging stations for electric vehicles,” Tiffin Mayor Aaron Montz said. “I want to thank the Seneca Regional Planning Commission and American Electric Power (AEP) for their assistance and generosity in obtaining this grant.”
