Ohio sisters die in hammock accident after brick pillar collapses

CLEVELAND HEIGHTS, Ohio — Police are investigating the death of two sisters Sunday evening as an apparent hammock accident.

According to Cleveland Heights Police Chief Annette Mecklenburg, police and fire crews responded to Berkshire Road around 7:45 p.m. Sunday evening to find two girls in a hammock tied to a tree, where a brick pillar collapsed and fell on them.

The girls received immediate treatment and were taken by a rescue squad to a nearby hospital once the pillar was removed and the girls were freed, a news release from police states.

The victims were identified as 12-year-old Chasey Scaravilli and 14-year-old Scout Scaravilli, according to the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner’s Office.

The Hathaway Brown School, which the girls attended, said in a statement that their community is saddened by the loss and that the girls will be greatly missed.

“The entire HB community is saddened by the loss of the Scaravilli sisters; they will be greatly missed by so many friends, classmates, and teachers. Our thoughts and prayers are dedicated to their family.”

The incident remains under investigation, according to police.
