TIFFIN — The Heidelberg University School of Music & Theatre is offering music educators an opportunity to seize the summer with online courses for graduate credits, coursework toward a Master of Music Education (MME) degree, or Continuing Education units.
Although the MME courses are completely online, they are anything but remote learning, according to Dr. Carol Dusdieker, director of Heidelberg’s School of Music & Theatre. Students will engage with School of Music & Theatre faculty Dr. Greg Ramsdell, Dr. Elizabeth Tracy, Professor Jon Waters and others for courses that focus on immediate classroom application.
“All students will have the ability to work online at their own place while also engaging in interactive online discussions and seminars,” she said. Classes are open to all music educators.
Remote classes begin June 30 and conclude on Aug. 3, but instruction is flexible according to student pacing.
Courses being offered this summer are as follows:
MUS 563: TEACHING AND LEARNING (DR. TRACY)
3 credits or 4.1 CEU. How and why do humans learn and why does it matter to music education? In this course, we will critically examine learning theory, music cognition, motivation, and development, as these topics apply to best practices in the K-12 music classroom. We will explore teaching strategies and resources that engage diverse learning styles and address the needs of all students.
MUS 560: UDL & BEST PRACTICE IN ONLINE MUSIC INSTRUCTION (DR. TRACY)
1 credit or 1 CEU. Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is a framework that helps teachers create meaningful instruction for all learners and embraces the barriers that teachers and students are facing in a climate of unprecedented remote learning. Join Dr. Elizabeth Tracy and guests in a special topics course offered online for current and pre-service music educators. Together we will explore the principles of UDL as a means for meaningful music teaching. In this active learning community, we will develop skills and engage with resources for music learning with remote and hybrid learning settings in mind. Participants will gain experience in innovative strategies for leading their school music communities.
MUS 560 BAND DIRECTOR’S TOOLBOX (PROF. WATERS)
1 credit or 1 CEU. Join Jon Waters and guests for sessions on all aspects of instrumental music education including: Marching Band Drill, Band Literature, Arranging for Bands, Instrument Care and Repair, and more.
MUS CHORAL TOOLBOX: (DR. RAMSDELL)
1 credit or 1 CEU. Join Dr. Greg Ramsdell and guests for sessions on all aspects of choral music education including: Choral Repertoire, Building a Healthy Vocal Technique K-12, Fostering Musicianship in Ensembles, and more.
In addition to classes offered by Heidelberg faculty, Music educators can participate in Showchoir Camps of America VIRTUAL camp running July 12-18. Earn up to 3 graduate credits or 5 CEUs. Please see the course description below.
