PLEASANT TOWNSHIP, Seneca County, Ohio — The Fremont Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating a two-vehicle fatal crash that occurred Saturday morning.
Troopers say the crash occurred on State Route 53 near milepost 18 in Seneca County at approximately 6:45 a.m.
David F. Haley, 59, of Bellefontaine, OH, was driving a 2001 GMC Sierra, towing a boat/trailer, north on State Route 53.
Ren Williams, 48, of Peru, IN, was operating a freight train west, crossing over State Route 53.
Mr. Haley failed to maintain an assured clear distance ahead, striking the train before traveling off the left side of the roadway.
The boat/trailer came to final rest in the lanes of travel and was struck by another motorist.
Mr. Haley was wearing a seat-belt at the time of the crash. He suffered incapacitating injuries and was transported to Tiffin Mercy Hospital by North Central EMS.
Francis S. Mckenzie, 59, of Bellefontaine, OH, was a front right passenger in Mr. Haley’s vehicle. He was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash. He suffered fatal injuries and was transported to Tiffin Mercy Hospital by North Central EMS.
Mr. Williams was not injured in the crash.
Alcohol and/or drugs are not suspected in the crash, which remains under investigation.
Assisting on scene were the Seneca County Sheriff’s Office, Norfolk and Southern Police Department, Old Fort Fire Department, North Central EMS and John’s Towing.
