Walmart CEO: Hair dye and clippers are the new coronavirus panic buys
Move over, toilet paper and hand sanitizer. There’s a new panic buy item on the block amid the novel coronavirus pandemic.
As many salons and barber shops nationwide have been forced to close due to lockdown restrictions amid the pandemic, people are desperate to maintain their manes — turning to DIY measures.
“People are starting to need a haircut,” Walmart CEO Doug McMillon said on NBC’s “Today” show. “You see more beard trimmers and hair color and things like that. You can definitely see that as people have stayed home, their focus shifted. It’s interesting to watch the dynamic play out.”
McMillon said hair dye and clippers are flying off store shelves.
Sales of hair clippers have increased more than 160 percent, and hair coloring products saw an increase of 23 percent from a year ago, according to research from Nielsen.
