Ohio State Highway Patrol investigating fatal crash involving pedestrian on US Route 250

The Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating a single vehicle fatal crash involving a pedestrian that occurred Sunday at approximately 7:14 p.m. on U.S. Route 250 near mile post 5 in Perkins Township, Erie County.

Amanda R. Horvath, age 39, of Milan, Ohio was operating a 2013 Buick SUV. Ms. Horvath did not sustained any injuries. Ms. Horvath was wearing a safety belt at the time of the crash.

Dennis J. Mahutga, age 59, of Corning, California was walking across U.S. Route 250 at the intersection of Kalahari Drive. Mr. Mahutga was struck by the SUV and sustained fatal injuries.

Horvath was southbound on U.S. Route 250. Mahutga, the pedestrian, was attempting to cross U.S. 250 from Kalahari to the Hy-Miler gas station. Troopers say Mahutga was struck in the intersection by Horvath.

Alcohol and/or drugs use are unknown at this time and the crash remains under investigation.  The northbound lanes of U.S. Route 250 were closed for approximately 2 hours while the scene was investigated.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol was assisted on scene by Erie County Sheriff’s Office, Perkins Township Police Department, Huron Fire Department, and Foster’s Towing.
